Congress Considers Clean Ports Act Again

Photo by franky242For the third time in three years, congress is considering enacting the Clean Ports Act, which would allow ports greater control over trucks servicing the port.

Representative Jerrold Nadler, D-NY and Senator Kristen Gillibrand, D-NY reintroduced the bill to their respective chambers on August 1st.

The new legislation would allow ports to to adopt requirements for trucks in order to “reasonably related” to reducing environmental hardship including air pollution, traffic congestion, and port efficiency. It would also give ports authority to enact more simple measures, like requiring trucks to park off the street or publicly display the company’s phone number to report any public safety concerns.

For hiring companies whose trucks regularly service ports, how do you anticipate this legislation will affect your business? Logistical concerns around time delays could be warranted, or will the Clean Ports Act be beneficial to drivers and ports alike?
